New outdoor sirens are now active, with free weather radios and emergency kits available for families in the flood zone.

CRUSO, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Storm Center) — Haywood County’s new outdoor siren alert system is now active, and emergency officials are inviting families to learn how the system works and how to prepare before the next severe weather emergency.

A free preparedness event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cruso Volunteer Fire Department.

Haywood County Emergency Services is providing families living in the Cruso flood zone with a free emergency preparedness kit and weather radio, with a limit of one per household.

Residents can:

  • Learn what to do when you hear the sirens.
  • Build an emergency plan for your family.
  • Receive a free emergency kit and weather radio — one per household.
  • Get documents scanned for free.
  • Register for Haywood Alerts.
  • Sign up for free in-home emergency preparedness training.

The Storm Center encourages families in and around Cruso to take advantage of the opportunity to prepare now — before severe weather or flooding threatens the community.
