(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Thursday afternoon Governor Bill Lee declared a state of emergency ahead of the pending winter weather situation.
In North Carolina, Governor Stein declared a State of Emergency on Wednesday as North Carolina prepares for the impacts of a major winter storm.
“A winter storm is approaching, and now is the time to prepare,” said Governor Stein. “Please get ready. Get everything you need in advance of the storm and have a plan in case your power goes out. I encourage all North Carolinians to stay home and off the roads this weekend unless absolutely necessary so first responders can do their jobs safely and effectively.”

TEMA said Tennesseans should prepare for winter weather impacts as early as Friday, Jan. 23 as a system moves through the state. The active weather event is expected to persist through the weekend, with impacts possible beyond due to the much below normal temperatures.
TEMA and partner agencies, including TDOT and THP, are actively monitoring weather trends and are prepared to support response and recovery efforts should winter hazards impact Tennessee.
Roadway conditions are expected to deteriorate in both states Saturday and could remain hazardous for several days after the storm due to the sustained subfreezing temperatures that are expected throughout the next week.
