(SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Road conditions across the Smoky Mountain region have improved, but emergency managers are reminding people to be aware of ice patches still on the roads.
Police in Sevierville said roadways had significantly improved Sunday afternoon. They warned of black ice possible on Monday morning.
“Large scale refreeze is likely again tonight on roads that are wet or snow covered, with predicted temperatures in the single digits,” the department said on Facebook.
In some areas of Sevier County, hazardous travel conditions remained in place across the area, especially on secondary, residential, and tertiary roads.
In Swain County, North Carolina, the sheriff said conditions had improved but didn’t want people to get a false sense of safety while traveling.
“While our NCDOT crews are making progress and the main roads are beginning to improve, please do not let that give you a false sense of security. Our secondary roads remain extremely slick and dangerous. We are also finding that many private driveways across the county are currently inaccessible, even for emergency vehicles in some cases,” said Sheriff Brian Kirkland.
Kirkland asked people to check on neighbors and reminded folks that private driveways across the county are currently inaccessible.
Closures continue into Monday according to Haywood County. Due to the impacts of winter weather, all Haywood County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026.
Back in Tennessee, Cocke County says many roads are still dangerous and impassable.
The county sheriff’s office said highway departments are working diligently on the main roads. All secondary roads are dangerous. They said they are noticing a lot of traffic, and first responders are responding to several vehicles stuck and running off the roadway. It is advisable not to be traveling unless you have no other choice.
