(GATLINBURG, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Plans for Sunday afternoon should involve something outside. A hike in the mountains or a ride around Cades Cove would be something many of you may enjoy.
Here’s a few ideas and how to help you plan your day in the Great Smoky Mountains.
CADES COVE
Lets start in Cades Cove where there’s a new view with some of the tree removal having been completed this past week. The cove is open on Sunday to cars. A mid-day picnic will come with plenty of sunshine a light breeze and temperatures in the low 60s. Some of you will want some light sleeves.
The high temperature today hits around 3 p.m. where it should be 66 degrees in Cades Cove. More clouds build in closer to sunshine for a partly cloudy sky and temperatures in the mid 50s.
NEWFOUND GAP
The winds will be a bit stronger the higher you go in elevation today. Up at Newfound Gap, winds will be out of the west sustained at 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph at times. Mid-day temperatures are in the mid 50s, with a high near 58. It’s a mostly cloudy sky closer to sunset and temperatures holding in the mid 40s. This is the highest elevation of the park by way of car with Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) closed for the winter and is expected to open on April 1.
SMOKEMONT
The North Carolina side of the Smoky Mountains will see more sunshine early on than the Tennessee side. Clouds will build through the day for a generally cloudy sunset. Lunchtime picnic from Smokemont to Oconaluftee will be chilly in the mid 50s.
An afternoon hike to Chasteen Creek Cascade will come with winds calming closer to sunset. The recent rain should help make for a beautiful view of the cascade. Remember to watch for roots and rocks along the way. Temperatures are around 52 for the 5 pm hour.
