Tennessee-Texas football game and fall break travel are expected to bring about 10,000 passengers through TYS on Sunday.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Travel Center) — Travelers using McGhee Tyson Airport this weekend should expect significant crowds as the Tennessee-Texas football game coincides with fall break travel across East Tennessee.
Airport officials expect Sunday, Sept. 27, to be the busiest passenger travel day in the airport’s history, with approximately 10,000 passengers expected to travel through the terminal.
Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in the Knoxville area for Saturday’s matchup between the Tennessee Volunteers and Texas Longhorns, while local families are also traveling for fall break.
Airport officials are advising passengers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure.
Travelers should also download their airline’s mobile app for the latest flight information and consider prebooking ground transportation. Longer-than-normal lines are expected at ticket counters, security checkpoints and concessions throughout the weekend.
McGhee Tyson officials say airport staff and its partners are adding personnel, opening ticket counters and security checkpoints earlier, and taking additional steps to help manage the increased passenger volume.
Passengers are encouraged to allow extra time, plan ahead and be prepared for delays as the airport handles what is expected to be a record travel day.
For travelers flying out of or into East Tennessee, airport officials are also encouraging passengers to be patient as crews work to keep traffic moving.
