Wet weekend ahead with 1–3 inches of rain possible; isolated higher totals could reach 4–5 inches

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Storm Center) — A wetter weather pattern is taking shape for the Smokies this weekend, with excessive rainfall possible from Saturday into Sunday.

Current estimates call for 1 to 3 inches of rain across the area, with isolated locations potentially picking up 4 to 5 inches. Where it rains the hardest, it can pour, creating the potential for localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and places that receive repeated rounds of rain.

THE TIMELINE

FRIDAY:
Isolated showers begin to move into the region. The day won’t be a washout, but rain chances will be increasing.

FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY:
Showers become more widespread overnight and continue into Saturday. This is when the wet pattern really begins to ramp up.

SATURDAY — UT FOOTBALL:
If you’re heading to the Tennessee game, plan for wet weather. Rain could be around during the game, so pack a poncho or rain gear and be prepared for a soggy trip to Neyland Stadium.

SATURDAY NIGHT — GATLINBURG:
The rain threat continues into Saturday night, including for the Cabin Fever Halloween Party in Gatlinburg. Anyone heading out should plan for a wet night and dress accordingly.

SUNDAY:
Sunday remains wet, but the rainfall should become more off-and-on, with periods of showers rather than continuous rain.

THE BIG QUESTION: WHEN DOES THE HEAVIEST RAIN FALL?

We’re not ready to lock in an exact timing forecast yet. The overall signal for a wet weekend is becoming clearer, but where the heaviest rain develops — and exactly when it arrives — still needs to be refined.

Higher-resolution weather data will begin coming in Thursday, which should give us a much clearer picture of the timing, rainfall totals and areas most likely to see the heaviest rain.

For now, the message is simple: plan on a wet weekend.

And remember: where it rains, it pours. Keep Smokies.LIVE Radar handy and stay weather-aware, especially if you’re traveling or spending time outdoors this weekend.
