Family-owned restaurant features signature schnitzel biscuit, hearty breakfast bowls and homemade Southern classics in the heart of Maggie Valley.
MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Adventure Center) — From scratch-made sausage gravy and cheesy grits to creative breakfast sandwiches with railroad-inspired names, Maggie Valley Breakfast Depot is giving locals and visitors a reason to make breakfast a destination in the mountains.
Located at 3047 Soco Road in the heart of Maggie Valley, the family-owned restaurant specializes in hearty breakfast favorites, handheld sandwiches and made-from-scratch dishes.
Jim Starley, who was interviewed at the restaurant, said one of the Depot’s signature creations is the schnitzel biscuit, a dish he considers unique to the restaurant.

The sandwich features a pounded chicken breast with a light, fluffy coating that is marinated overnight before being served on a biscuit.
Another popular option is the Rail Yard Rooster, which features a chicken breast prepared with the restaurant’s signature approach. The menu also includes the Whistlestop Sizzler, made with chicken-fried steak on a biscuit, and the Switchyard, featuring country ham.
Starley said the restaurant’s menu expanded significantly with help from Kim, who introduced several dishes, including breakfast bowls and cheesy grits that have developed a following among regular customers.
“Everything we have is made from scratch,” Starley said.
The restaurant prepares its sausage gravy fresh each morning. Its cheesy grits are another standout, with some customers returning multiple times a week specifically for the dish.
For those looking for a bigger breakfast, the Choo-Choo Bowl offers what Starley describes as about three pounds of food. The menu also includes pancakes, traditional egg-and-grits plates, biscuits, toast and other breakfast staples.
The Depot combines creative menu items with familiar Southern breakfast favorites, offering options for visitors looking to start a day exploring the Smoky Mountains and surrounding communities.
Starley said the restaurant is located across from Carpet Golf on Soco Road, making it an easy stop for visitors traveling through Maggie Valley.
