NCDOT projects along Interstate 40 are expected to reach completion in fall 2027 after construction began in 2021.

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Travel Center) — Two bridge replacement projects along Interstate 40 in Haywood County are listed as 90% complete, with construction expected to wrap up in fall 2027, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The projects involve less than a mile of eastbound Interstate 40 and include replacing bridges over local roads and waterways.

One project involves Bridge 430124 over White Oak Road (SR 1338) and Fines Creek. The work includes replacing the existing bridge.

Another project involves the I-40 bridge over Harmon Den Road and Cold Springs Creek Road (SR 1101), as well as Cold Spring Creek.

Construction on the projects began in fall 2021. NCDOT lists fall 2027 as the estimated completion timeframe. This is not related to the Helene damage of 2024.

The work uses a construction manager/general contractor (CMGC) delivery method, which brings the contractor into the project development process to help coordinate planning, costs and construction.

The bridge projects are part of ongoing infrastructure work along I-40 through the mountains of western North Carolina, a key transportation corridor connecting the region with Tennessee.

Drivers traveling through Haywood County should continue to watch for construction activity and follow posted traffic signs and any temporary traffic-control measures.
