Child Car Seat Safety Check

The Gatlinburg Police Department (GPD) will host a free Child Car Seat Safety Check Event on Thursday, August 6, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Rocky Top Sports World.
The event is open to the public and provides parents, grandparents, and caregivers the opportunity to have their child safety seats inspected by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, who will be employees of the Police Department and Fire Department. Technicians will ensure each car seat is properly installed, verify that it is appropriate for the child’s age, height, and weight, and provide hands-on education to help caregivers safely transport their children.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), many child safety seats are installed or used incorrectly, reducing their effectiveness in a crash. This event is designed to help families gain confidence that their children are traveling as safely as possible.
A properly installed child safety seat can make all the difference in the event of a crash,” said Gatlinburg Police Chief Ronnie Barrett. “We encourage all parents and caregivers to take advantage of this free service.
“This event is about prevention and education. Our certified technicians will work one-on-one with families to ensure every child is riding safely and that caregivers understand how to properly use their car seats.”
No appointment is necessary. Participants should arrive with their child, if possible, along with the vehicle and child safety seat they use regularly. Technicians will inspect the seat, make any necessary adjustments, and answer questions about proper installation and usage.
