Overnight waterline project expected to have minimal impact on daytime traffic.
NEWPORT, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Travel Center) — Drivers traveling through Newport during the evening and overnight hours should be aware of a new construction project beginning this week on North Street.
According to Newport Utilities, work on a major waterline replacement project began Monday, Aug. 3, as part of the utility’s long-term, 20-year water system improvement plan.
Construction crews will work Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. until 4 a.m. in an effort to minimize disruptions during the morning and afternoon school and work commute.
While lane closures and brief delays are possible overnight, Newport Utilities says the schedule is designed so the project should have little to no impact on daytime traffic, unlike the bridge work completed in the area last week.
The project is being completed in cooperation with the City of Newport and the State of Tennessee and is expected to provide long-term improvements to the community’s water infrastructure.
The Smokies.LIVE Travel Center encourages motorists traveling through Newport during evening and overnight hours to slow down, watch for workers and be prepared for changing traffic patterns in the construction zone.
