The latest BLOOM Project transforms a former uninhabitable property into a beautiful new outdoor space for the community.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Adventure Center) — A vacant lot with an uninhabitable house has been given a new purpose, becoming the latest community beautification project in Knox County.

Knox County Parks and Recreation Senior Director Joe Mack joined District 3 Knox County Commissioner Gina Oster and other local elected officials to open Hardwicke Park, the newest project in the county’s BLOOM initiative.

The Parks and Recreation team and the BLOOM Advisory Committee first walked the property in October 2024, identifying an opportunity to transform the site by adding natural beauty, plants and trees.

🌱 What is the BLOOM Project?

BLOOM stands for Beautifying Local Outdoor Spaces withOut Mowing.

The Parks and Recreation initiative is designed to reduce Knox County’s carbon footprint by cutting mowing by 25% while creating more beautiful and functional outdoor spaces throughout the county.

Hardwicke Park is the latest example of that effort, turning a previously vacant and unusable property into a space designed to bring natural beauty to the neighborhood.

🌿 More BLOOM Projects Coming

Hardwicke Park joins other BLOOM Project locations at:

  • Ball Camp Park
  • Gibbs Ruritan Park
  • John Tarleton Park

And the work isn’t finished.

Three more BLOOM Project locations are currently in the works, continuing Knox County’s effort to create attractive outdoor spaces while reducing the amount of land that requires regular mowing.

From a property that once sat vacant to a new community space filled with natural beauty, Hardwicke Park is another example of turning unused land into something the community can enjoy.
