GATLINBURG, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Storm Center) — If you’re planning a trip to see the fall colors in the Smokies, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast. Rain is making a return Wednesday, but drier weather is expected to move back in just in time for more opportunities to enjoy the mountains.
Wednesday will bring widespread showers, with thunderstorms possible during the afternoon and evening. Gatlinburg could see temperatures climb to around 76 degrees, while Maggie Valley will be cooler, with a high near 60. Rain chances will remain high Wednesday night, reaching 90% in Gatlinburg and 80% in Maggie Valley.
The rain may put a temporary pause on some outdoor plans, but it doesn’t mean the fall scenery has to wait.
Thursday brings improving conditions, with partly sunny skies in Gatlinburg and mostly sunny weather expected around Maggie Valley. Highs will reach the low 70s on the Tennessee side and the middle 60s in western North Carolina.
That could make Thursday a nice opportunity to get out and enjoy the season. Take a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, explore the mountain overlooks or head up to Ober Mountain in Gatlinburg for a different perspective of the fall colors.
A few showers could return Thursday night into early Friday, but Friday is shaping up to be mostly sunny around Maggie Valley and partly sunny in Gatlinburg. Highs will range from the upper 50s in Maggie Valley to around 70 in Gatlinburg.
Whether you’re chasing fall color along the Parkway, exploring the Great Smoky Mountains or taking in the views from Ober Mountain, there are still opportunities to enjoy autumn in the Smokies. Just keep the rain jacket close Wednesday and plan for cooler temperatures as the week moves along.
