Temperatures could drop to 30 degrees in higher elevations, threatening sensitive plants and unprotected outdoor plumbing.
BRYSON CITY, N.C. — A Freeze Watch is in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday morning for the mountains of western North Carolina, where temperatures could fall to around 30 degrees, especially at higher elevations.
The National Weather Service warns that freezing temperatures and frost could damage or kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also be damaged by the cold.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions before temperatures drop. Sensitive plants should be covered or moved indoors when possible. Homeowners should also drain in-ground sprinkler systems, disconnect garden hoses and cover exposed outdoor pipes.
The potential for freezing temperatures is especially important for gardeners and anyone with outdoor plants that have not yet been prepared for colder weather.
A Freeze Watch means conditions are favorable for freezing temperatures, but the exact timing and extent of the cold could still change. Residents should monitor updated forecasts for the latest information.
The watch remains in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday morning across the western North Carolina mountains.
