KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Information Center) — One of Knoxville’s most recognizable landmarks is preparing for a new look after dark.

Visit Knoxville and the city of Knoxville are partnering to install new exterior lighting at the Sunsphere, with work planned for 2027.

The lighting project is designed to highlight the landmark’s distinctive architecture and give the golden structure a new appearance across the city’s skyline after sunset.

Installation is expected to take place next year, with the lighting debut planned for fall 2027.

The Sunsphere Observation Deck will remain open to visitors throughout the project, according to the announcement.

The Sunsphere was built for the 1982 World’s Fair and has remained a defining feature of Knoxville’s skyline for more than four decades.
