GATLINBURG, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Information Center) — The Tennessee Valley Authority is reminding residents and outdoor enthusiasts to watch for young copperhead snakes during November.
Baby copperheads can be difficult to spot because of their small size. They often hide in damp areas, including beneath logs along hiking trails and around flowerpots in yards.
One identifying feature is the yellow-green tip on the snake’s tail, which can help distinguish young copperheads.
TVA encourages hikers and others spending time outdoors to look carefully before stepping over logs, reaching into wooded areas or placing their hands on surfaces where snakes could be hiding.
Anyone who encounters a copperhead should keep a safe distance and avoid attempting to handle or move the snake.
The reminder encourages residents and visitors to respect wildlife, give snakes plenty of space and take precautions to stay safe outdoors.
