Newfound Gap Road, from Gatlinburg, TN to Cherokee, NC, has temporarily opened at 12:00 PM. The road will close again at 6:00 PM.

The cold weather and snow showers left roads in the Great Smoky Mountains closed on Thursday.
The National Park Service left Newfound Gap Road closed on Thursday while allowing some others to reopen after the snow and bitter cold.
Wind chills in the National Park will be up to 15 below going into Friday morning. Anyone hiking above 3,000 feet needs to enter with extreme caution.
Crews will re-evaluate Newfound Gap Road on Friday. It is possible the road could be reopened in the afternoon.

Several inches of new snow fell in the Great Smoky Mountains overnight as cold weather alerts continue.
Wednesday night, 5 inches fell at Mt. LeConte with 2 reported at Newfound Gap. Other snow reports include Swain County, Cherokee, NC, with 0.5 inches of snow.
An additional round of snow should come through on Friday night and for parts of the weekend could bring more snow and keep Newfound Gap Road closes through the mountains.
A cold weather advisory is in effect for the North Carolina mountains through Friday above 3500. The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.
Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
