(SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – On average, about 3-5″ of snow fell on the Smokies over night. Another 3-5″ is expected as a winter storm moves across the area.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park says the Spur is open between Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge, but the road is icy and snow covered. Here’s a picture from the National Park Service.

Due to heavy snowfall and a Winter Weather Warning, Park Visitor Centers and most park roads are CLOSED today. Crews are working hard to clear roads, but snow accumulation remains high and roads are icy under the snow.

Knoxville Airport runways are closed. Due to the current rate of continued accumulation, the airfield and runways will be closed until 12pm EST. If you’re traveling today, please expect flight delays, and check your flight status at https://smokies.live/traffic-2/.

JUST IN 8 AM – No major changes to report at this time. Snow continues to fall across Sevier County, and road conditions are continuing to deteriorate.

Daylight, but doesn’t look like it on Jake Thomas Road in Pigeon Forge.

Both Sevier County and Cocke County reported impassable roads that were covered with snow.

TDOT worked on Interstate 40 through the night to keep that roadway passable, but watch for snow and ice.

Sevier County Emergency Operations Center continues to operate at a Level 2 assisting with response.

FROM SWAIN COUNTY

The downtown areas and highways are snow covered. For your safety, please remain at home and avoid unnecessary travel. Allow road crews and emergency personnel to work safely without putting themselves or others at risk. Thank you for your cooperation

FROM PIGEON FORGE

Travel is not advised at this time so crews can safely treat area roads. Many roads are slick and unsafe.

If you abandoned a vehicle on the roadside, please call us and let us know its location.

If you’re able to stay home, please do so. Crews are working as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience. Stay warm and stay safe!

FROM SEVIER COUNTY

The Sevier County EMS is also operating on their Level 2 snow plan.

Traveling at this time is not advised. City and Sevier County Highway Dept crews continue to treat and plow. TDOT is also treating state roads. The current focus is on primary roads and assisting Sevier County Ambulance and other first responders.

  1. We are about 14 miles to the Northeast of Maryville and 14 miles southeast of Knoxville in Blount county and have 6 inches of snow on the ground still snowing lightly.
