American Heart Association recognizes Tennova hospitals for delivering timely, evidence-based stroke treatment that improves patient outcomes.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Turkey Creek Medical Center and North Knoxville Medical Center have earned national recognition from the American Heart Association for their commitment to providing high-quality stroke care.

Turkey Creek Medical Center received the 2026 Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Award and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award, while North Knoxville Medical Center earned the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Silver Plus Award.

The awards recognize hospitals that consistently follow the latest evidence-based guidelines to provide timely treatment for stroke patients, helping improve outcomes and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

According to the American Heart Association’s 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Report, stroke is the nation’s fourth-leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a clot or ruptured blood vessel, making rapid treatment critical to reducing brain damage and improving recovery.

“Tennova Healthcare is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Tony Benton, market CEO of Tennova Healthcare. “Get With The Guidelines helps our teams put proven science into practice every day. Research shows this approach can support better recovery, with the ultimate goal of helping the greater Knoxville community live longer, healthier lives.”

The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program helps hospitals nationwide align patient care with the latest clinical research while emphasizing education to help patients manage their recovery after leaving the hospital.

Each year, hospitals qualify for the recognition by demonstrating consistent adherence to national stroke care standards and best practices.

“We are proud to recognize North Knoxville Medical Center and Turkey Creek Medical Center for their commitment to caring for people experiencing stroke,” said Dr. Steven Messe, volunteer chair of the American Heart Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, including greater likelihood of being discharged home, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”

Hospital officials said the recognition reflects their ongoing commitment to delivering timely, high-quality care for stroke patients throughout the greater Knoxville area.
