SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is now in effect for parts of East Tennessee, including the Smoky Mountains, through 2 a.m.
Meteorologist Kyle Grainger says tonight’s storms could pack damaging winds capable of knocking down trees and causing power outages. Storms may also bring frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and locally heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.
This is a good time to prepare — charge your phones, weather radios and other notification devices now so you’re ready if power goes out or warnings are issued.
The Storm Prediction Center has much of East Tennessee in a Level 1 of 5 Marginal Risk for severe weather tonight. While most storms will not become severe, a few stronger storms could produce damaging wind gusts and other hazards.
