Shelter urgently seeking fosters, adopters, volunteers and donations as 23 dogs and five cats begin recovery.
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Information Center) — The Sevier Animal Care Center is asking the community to step up after taking in 28 animals from a hoarding situation.
The shelter said Wednesday it received 23 dogs and five cats, many of which arrived emaciated and frightened.
Despite their condition, shelter staff say the animals are doing better than expected.
All 28 animals have now been vaccinated, dewormed and treated for fleas. They have also been moved into clean, warm spaces with access to food and water.
The animals will receive additional care in the days ahead.
Volunteers are scheduled to come in Thursday to give the animals baths, while the shelter’s veterinarian will evaluate them for potential medical issues.
Adoption fees waived
The shelter is now making an urgent appeal for people who can foster, foster-to-adopt or adopt.
All adoption fees are waived until further notice.
The Sevier Animal Care Center will be open to the public Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. for people interested in meeting the animals and potentially providing them with a home.
Those interested in fostering can complete the shelter’s foster questionnaire through the Sevier Animal Care Center foster form.
Other ways to help
The shelter says there are several ways the community can help while these animals recover.
Volunteer: People who can donate their time can sign up through the Sevier Animal Care Center volunteer form.
Donate supplies: The shelter’s most-needed items include:
- Dog food
- Dog toys
- Cat food
- Blankets
- Towels

Shelter officials say the immediate need is for people willing to open their homes to these animals.
For those able to foster, adopt or foster-to-adopt, the shelter is asking the community to come by during public hours and meet the animals.
Every foster home and adoption creates space and resources for the shelter to continue helping animals in need.
