MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Adventure Center) — The Town of Maggie Valley is giving residents an opportunity to purchase bear-resistant trash cans designed to help keep wildlife out of household garbage.

The town is offering 96-gallon bear-resistant trash cans at cost to residents. The cans feature a rugged rim design, recessed auto-gravity lock, rugged hinge and increased radius intended to help prevent bears from chewing through the container.

The cans are also designed for easy maneuverability.

Residents must preorder by Aug. 28.

The cost is $385 per trash can, with payment accepted after Sept. 8. Each address is limited to one trash can.

Delivery is expected around Oct. 1.

Once the new bear-resistant container is delivered, the resident’s current CWS trash can will be picked up.

The town said the bear-resistant can belongs to the resident and can be taken with them if they move.

The program is intended to help residents reduce access to household garbage, which can attract bears and other wildlife into neighborhoods.

For Maggie Valley residents living in an area where bears are a regular sight, officials say securing trash is an important part of reducing human-wildlife conflicts.
