Smokies.LIVE Storm Center forecasts improving conditions Monday, with sunshine and warmer temperatures expected Tuesday

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Storm Center) — The remnants of Hurricane Isaias will continue moving through the Smoky Mountains on Sunday, bringing showers, patchy fog and gusty winds before drier and milder weather returns early next week.

High winds remain possible across the Tennessee mountains and foothills, southwestern North Carolina and portions of southwestern Virginia. Breezy conditions are expected elsewhere across the region.

In Gatlinburg, showers are forecast Sunday, with an 80% chance of precipitation and a high near 69 degrees. West winds of 10 to 15 mph could gust as high as 30 mph during the afternoon.

Showers are likely Sunday night, mainly before midnight, with a low around 60 degrees. West winds of 10 to 15 mph could gust to 25 mph. Patchy fog also may develop overnight.

In Bryson City, showers are likely Sunday, with a 70% chance of precipitation and a high near 66 degrees. South winds of 6 to 8 mph will shift west during the afternoon, with gusts reaching 20 mph.

Showers may continue into Sunday night, with a 60% chance of precipitation and a low around 56 degrees. West-northwest winds around 9 mph could gust to 20 mph, while patchy fog is possible during the evening and overnight.

Residents and visitors should remain alert for gusty winds, especially in higher elevations and exposed mountain locations. Drivers should also use caution in areas with reduced visibility from fog and on wet roads.

Improving weather for Columbus Day

Conditions are expected to improve Monday as the system moves away from the region.

Gatlinburg will see partly sunny skies and a high near 77 degrees on Columbus Day, with west winds of 5 to 10 mph. Bryson City is forecast to be mostly sunny, with a high near 75 degrees and northwest winds around 8 mph, gusting as high as 23 mph.

Monday night will be mostly clear across both communities, with lows around 58 degrees in Gatlinburg and 54 degrees in Bryson City.

Sunshine and warmer temperatures Tuesday

A return to dry weather is expected Tuesday, with sunshine and warmer temperatures across the Smokies.

Gatlinburg is forecast to reach 84 degrees, while Bryson City is expected to reach 81 degrees. Winds will remain light.

The improving forecast should bring more favorable conditions for outdoor activities across the region after a wet and breezy end to the weekend.
