Safety from fireworks this July 4th could come right in your own backyard with a fire-retardant spray.

(SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE — As Independence Day celebrations approach, fire officials are urging residents to use fireworks safely and take steps to protect their homes from accidental fires.

While fireworks remain a popular Fourth of July tradition, firefighters say a single spark can quickly ignite dry grass, mulch or other combustible materials, especially during the summer months.

One new tool aimed at reducing that risk is the SAFE SOSS® Three-Step Wildfire Safety Bundle, developed by active wildland firefighter Nicholai Allen. The commercial and residential wildfire defense system is available at Lowe’s and is designed to help homeowners prepare their properties before a fire starts.

“It is something you can do now that is easier than before,” a fire safety expert said. “There’s a fire-retardant spray that you can actually apply in your backyard using your own three-quarter-inch garden hose.”

The system includes three products designed to reduce wildfire risk. An Ember Guard Carbon Filter installs behind existing vents to help block wind-driven embers while filtering smoke. High-Heat Ember Guard Tape seals small openings around vents, door frames and thresholds where embers can enter. The third component, the Twice Over Wildfire Risk-Reduction Spray, attaches to a standard garden hose and coats wood, mulch and vegetation with a clear, phosphate-based formula intended to slow or prevent ignition.

Wildfire experts say most homes destroyed during wildfires do not ignite from direct flames. Instead, wind-driven embers can travel long distances and ignite vulnerable areas around homes.

Firefighters say the wildfire protection products could also provide an added layer of protection if a stray firework lands in a backyard or near landscaping.

Pigeon Forge Firefighters are also reminding residents to understand local fireworks laws before celebrating.

Fireworks are prohibited within the incorporated city limits of municipalities in Sevier County. However, fireworks are generally permitted in unincorporated areas of the county where allowed under Tennessee law.

Fire officials recommend several basic safety precautions:

  • Use fireworks only in a clear, open area.
  • Keep fireworks away from homes, vehicles, trees and other flammable materials.
  • Have a garden hose or bucket of water readily available in case a fire starts.

“Get educated on these three basic products and prepare your home as soon as possible,” the fire safety expert said. “It’s probably the best weekend project that you could do to help protect your home.”

Fire officials say taking preventative measures before lighting fireworks can reduce the risk of injuries and property damage, helping ensure a safer holiday for everyone.
