Smokies.LIVE Travel Center: Bridge repairs will bring four weekends of one-direction closures before Tennessee football season begins.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Travel Center) — Motorists traveling through downtown Knoxville should prepare for a series of weekend closures on James White Parkway (State Route 158) as bridge repairs continue throughout August.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has scheduled four consecutive weekends of one-direction closures to complete the work before the start of the University of Tennessee football season.

Closure Schedule

Southbound James White Parkway

  • Aug. 7-10
  • Aug. 14-17

Northbound James White Parkway

  • Aug. 21-24
  • Aug. 28-31

In addition to the parkway closures, ramp closures will affect eastbound travel options in downtown Knoxville.

Drivers are encouraged to use Alcoa Highway (U.S. 129/SR 115) or Hall of Fame Drive as alternate routes to avoid delays.

TDOT says the schedule is weather dependent. If work must be postponed because of weather, it will not be rescheduled during a Tennessee Volunteers home football weekend to help minimize traffic impacts.

The Smokies.LIVE Travel Center recommends motorists allow extra travel time, follow posted detours and expect heavier-than-normal traffic in the downtown Knoxville area during each weekend closure.
