KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Adventure Center) — In a world of online shopping and mass-produced fashion, one Knoxville shop is slowing things down—one custom hat at a time.

Tucked away off Emory Road, Knoxville’s Hat Bar is giving customers the chance to create a hat that’s as unique as they are.

Whether it’s picking the perfect brim, shaping the crown or adding leather bands, chains, feathers and custom stitching, owner Nathan Bayless says every hat starts with one question: Who are you?

“I try to feel out somebody’s personality first,” Bayless said. “A hat should fit your personality just as much as it fits your head.”

That personal touch has made the shop a destination for everything from birthdays and weddings to girls’ nights out and corporate events. Customers can stop by for a one-of-a-kind design or even book Hat Bar pop-up experiences for special occasions.

But some of the most meaningful projects aren’t new hats at all.

Bayless says one of the fastest-growing parts of the business is restoring family heirlooms.

“We’ve done a ton of restorations,” he said. “People bring in Grandpa’s hat because they want to wear it to their wedding or another special event. That’s become one of my favorite things we do.”

Unlike larger cities where custom hat shaping has become trendy, Bayless says East Tennessee has had few places offering the service—making Knoxville’s Hat Bar something of a hidden gem.

For first-time customers nervous about wearing a felt hat, Bayless says not to worry.

“Most people don’t know what style they want,” he laughed. “People used to never leave the house without a hat. Now they’re a little hesitant, but they’re getting more adventurous.”

By the time customers walk out the door, they aren’t just leaving with a new accessory—they’re leaving with a handcrafted conversation piece that’s uniquely their own.
