Nearly 40 vehicles involved in crash near Lake Marion; officials warn drivers to avoid area

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. (Smokies.LIVE Information Center) — A major multi-vehicle crash has shut down Interstate 95 in both directions in South Carolina, creating significant delays along one of the East Coast’s busiest travel corridors.

Nearly 40 vehicles are involved in the pileup near mile marker 100 in the Lake Marion area, according to local emergency officials. Multiple tractor-trailers are among the vehicles involved.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said a plan is in place to clear the bridge, but the process is expected to take an extended period of time.

“We are utilizing all our local and state resources,” the agency said.

Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes.

Both directions of I-95 are currently blocked as emergency crews work to clear the crash scene and damaged vehicles.

The closure could create significant delays for travelers using I-95 through South Carolina. Drivers heading along the corridor should check traffic conditions and consider alternate routes before entering the area.

This is a developing story.
