HIGH WIND ALERT: SWAIN AND HAYWOOD COUNTIES
Cherokee, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Storm Center) — Strong winds are expected across Swain and Haywood counties in western North Carolina overnight, with the potential for dangerous gusts in higher elevations.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for elevations above 3,500 feet, where east winds of 15 to 25 mph could gust up to 60 mph. A Wind Advisory covers lower elevations, where gusts could reach 45 to 50 mph.
Both alerts begin at midnight tonight and continue through 8 a.m. Sunday.
The strongest winds could bring down trees and power lines, leading to widespread power outages in higher elevations. Lower elevations also could experience falling tree limbs, isolated power outages and unsecured objects being blown around.
Drivers should use extra caution overnight, particularly on exposed mountain roads and in areas prone to falling trees.
Residents in Swain and Haywood counties should secure outdoor objects, stay away from windows during the strongest winds and remain alert for changing conditions.
