Town crews inspect drainage systems, prepare emergency equipment as heavy rain threatens the region this weekend

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Information Center) — The Town of Waynesville is preparing for potential impacts from Hurricane Isaias this weekend, with heavy rainfall, localized flooding and gusty winds among the primary concerns.

In a public safety notice issued Friday, Oct. 9, town officials said widespread rainfall is expected to begin Saturday morning and continue into Sunday, with rainfall totals generally forecast at 1 to 3 inches across the region. Locally higher amounts are possible.

The greatest flooding potential is expected Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning, according to the town.

Potential hazards include flooding, downed trees, gusty winds and isolated power outages. Officials said the severity of local impacts remains uncertain, but town departments are coordinating preparations to ensure personnel, equipment and resources are ready.

The Public Works Department is inspecting and clearing storm drains, catch basins and critical culverts, focusing on historically flood-prone areas. Crews also are inspecting and fueling vehicles, generators, chainsaws and other emergency equipment.

Additional preparations include securing town facilities, checking building drainage systems, preparing traffic barricades and emergency supplies, and coordinating staffing for potential storm-related calls.

The Waynesville Fire Department is monitoring weather conditions and preparing for potential flooding, severe weather and other emergencies. Town personnel will continue monitoring conditions throughout the weekend and adjust response efforts as needed.

Officials are urging residents to monitor weather forecasts and emergency alerts, secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages by charging electronic devices and keeping flashlights, batteries and essential supplies available.

Residents also are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, particularly near streams, low-lying areas and locations prone to flooding.

Officials stressed that drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roadways. Residents should remove leaves and debris from nearby drainage areas only when it is safe to do so and should never enter floodwater or attempt to clear blocked drains during flooding.

Residents should call 911 for emergencies involving immediate threats to life or safety.

The town said its Public Works and Fire departments will maintain a coordinated approach to storm preparedness and response, asking residents to remain alert and give emergency personnel and crews room to work safely.
