Investigators are asking for the public’s help in determining what happened to a 50-year-old man found injured near downtown Knoxville.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville Police Department detectives are asking for the public’s help as they investigate what led to a man suffering life-threatening injuries early Saturday morning.
Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, to the area of Howard Baker Jr. Avenue and Honor Our Troops Drive after receiving a report of a man walking along the roadway with a severe head injury.
When officers arrived, they found 50-year-old Truman Chapman suffering from a significant head injury. Investigators said Chapman was unable to clearly explain what had happened.
According to KPD, Chapman was initially alert and evaluated by American Medical Response personnel at the scene. Officers also determined he had an outstanding Loudon County warrant for failure to appear on a previous public intoxication charge.
Police began transporting Chapman to meet deputies from the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office, but his condition deteriorated during the trip. He was instead taken by ambulance to UT Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized in extremely critical condition.
As detectives continued their investigation, they learned Chapman had left Isabella Tower on a personally owned electric scooter sometime after 10 p.m. Saturday night.
Investigators have not located the scooter and say they have not found additional evidence explaining how Chapman sustained his injuries.

Police say any information, no matter how small it may seem, could help investigators determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
