(SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – The cold air is surging south with the National Weather Service issuing a frost advisory for the Smoky Mountains.
Temperatures tonight from across the region will reach thresholds that could produce frost with limited wind.
Low temperatures on Sunday morning from upper 30s to near 40 on the Tennessee side to the North Carolina side of the Smokies in the low 30s to near freezing.

You should take precautions to protect plants. If you have plants in pots, it would be advisable to bring inside or cover overnight.

FROST ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 9 AM EDT SUNDAY... * WHAT...Temperatures as low as 33 degrees will likely result in frost formation. * WHERE...Portions of northeast Georgia and western North Carolina. * WHEN...From midnight tonight to 9 AM EDT Sunday. * IMPACTS...Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

May starts off cooler than normal by five to ten degrees and long-term signs show for an overall cooler pattern for the whole month.
The average high for Gatlinburg on Saturday, May 2, 2026 is 73 degrees. Smokies.LIVE Weather is forecasting a high in Gatlinburg of 63.

For the next 30 days, the modeling indicates a cooler than average temperature all month long for May. As you see by the map above, Tennessee and the Smoky Mountain region is right on the cusp of the dip in cool air. It may feel more like late fall than late spring at times.
A hike in the Smokies will come with cooler temperatures as well. The Chimney Tops Trail area will be in the mid 40s for the 11 a.m. hour. The high near 5 p.m. will be near 53. Highs at Newfound Gap will only be in the mid 40s Saturday afternoon.
This first week of May is definitely cooler than normal. Temperatures will stay in the low 70s and mid to upper 60s.
Long range, we do warm closer to normal with overnight lows staying in the 50s.
