Traffic Shift Scheduled for I-40 East in Haywood County

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (SMOKIES.LIVE) — Motorists traveling on Interstate 40 in western North Carolina should expect delays next week as crews work on a bridge replacement project near Champion Drive, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, contract crews will implement single-lane closures on Interstate 40 East near Exit 31 while work continues on a new bridge designed to replace the existing structure, which transportation officials say has reached the end of its service life.

As part of the operation, both the eastbound exit ramp and entrance ramp at Champion Drive (Exit 31) will be closed.

During the closures, drivers exiting I-40 East at Exit 31 will be detoured to Exit 33 and directed back onto I-40 West to reach Exit 31. Drivers seeking to enter I-40 East at Exit 31 will be routed onto I-40 West to Exit 27 before returning to I-40 East.

The bridge replacement marks a significant milestone in the project, which will provide a structure built to modern standards and expected to remain in service for at least 50 years, according to transportation officials.

Weather permitting, all lane and ramp closures are expected to be lifted by late Thursday afternoon. Officials advised motorists to use caution in the work zone and allow extra travel time while the traffic changes are in place.

During these closures, drivers will be detoured as follows:

  • I-40 East off-ramp traffic will follow the detour to Exit 33 back to I-40 West to Exit 31.
  • I-40 East on-ramp traffic will follow the detour using I-40 West to Exit 27 and back to I-40
    East.
Weather depending, all lane and ramp closures will be removed by late afternoon Thursday,
    June 11.
