Opening dates have been announced for Dolly Parton’s life story as a Broadway musical after the world premier last summer in Nashville.
(NEW YORK, NY) SMOKIES.LIVE — Dolly Parton will bring the story of her life to Broadway this winter as Dolly: A True Original Musical begins previews Dec. 7 at the St. James Theatre before officially opening Jan. 19, 2027 — Parton’s 81st birthday.
The new musical follows the country music icon’s journey from her humble beginnings in the mountains of East Tennessee to international superstardom. Featuring many of Parton’s biggest hits, the production includes a book co-written by Parton and Maria S. Schlatter.
“My whole life has been a musical,” Parton said in a statement. “A grand ole opera really and I can’t wait to present it to you on Broadway. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I’ve enjoyed livin’ it.”
The production arrives on Broadway following a sold-out world premiere in Nashville last summer, where audiences filled the theater throughout its initial run.
Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher leads the production, with choreography by Mandy Moore.
The musical marks Parton’s second major Broadway project. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter previously wrote the music and lyrics for 9 to 5: The Musical, which debuted on Broadway in 2009.
The creative team also includes scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Jennifer Moeller, lighting designer Donald Holder, sound designer Peter Hylenski, video designers Nathan Amzi and Joe Ransom, along with hair designer Robert Pickens and makeup design by Studio Pickens.
Tickets for the Broadway engagement are expected to go on sale ahead of the December start of previews.
