Sevier County Electric reported widespread outages after strong winds and heavy rain swept across the area.
SEVIER COUNTY, Tenn. — Thousands of Sevier County residents were left without electricity Tuesday evening after severe thunderstorms moved through the Smoky Mountains, bringing damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and frequent lightning.
According to Sevier County Electric System, approximately 4,000 customers were without power as crews responded to storm-related outages across the county.
The outages followed a line of strong thunderstorms that prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Sevier County, along with portions of Blount and Cocke counties. The storms were capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph, enough to bring down tree limbs and power lines.
Utility crews began assessing damage and restoring service as quickly and safely as conditions allowed.
Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling, especially if they encounter intersections with non-functioning traffic signals. Drivers should treat dark traffic lights as four-way stops and watch for downed trees or power lines.
Residents are also reminded to stay away from any downed electrical lines and report outages directly to Sevier County Electric.
