Special events will offer a calmer, sensory-friendly experience and discounted admission
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (Smokies.LIVE Information Center) — Families looking for an inclusive way to explore science, technology and hands-on learning can mark two special dates on their calendars.
WonderWorks Pigeon Forge will host two upcoming Sensory Days, designed to provide guests with special needs and their families an opportunity to enjoy the attraction in a calmer, more comfortable environment.
The upside-down attraction will host Sensory Days on Sunday, Aug. 30, from 2 to 6 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Admission during both events will be $15 per person, plus tax, at the door.
During Sensory Days, WonderWorks will reduce stimulation throughout the indoor attraction. Music will be lowered, loud exhibits will be turned off and the Inversion Tunnel will be stopped.
The goal is to create an environment where guests can explore the attraction at their own pace without some of the sights, sounds and other sensory experiences that can be overwhelming.
“WonderWorks is all about spreading the wonders of STEAM and learning, so we strive to ensure everyone can experience it! Sensory Days are always a blast,” said Malcolm Hale, guest relations manager at WonderWorks Pigeon Forge. “We love seeing families and groups take in the exhibits in a unique way.”
WonderWorks says Sensory Days are popular with local families and can also provide an opportunity for special education organizations to bring groups to the attraction. Staff work with visiting organizations to help plan visits and make the experience as smooth as possible.
The August event falls on a Sunday, while the September Sensory Day is scheduled for a Monday, giving families different opportunities to participate as summer winds down and the school year gets underway.
Beyond Sensory Days, WonderWorks offers hands-on educational experiences throughout the year. The attraction features six Wonder Zones covering STEAM topics including extreme weather, physics, space exploration, light, sound and optical illusions.
Families can also add the official WonderWorks Casebook to their visit. The interactive activity challenges guests to answer questions as they explore the exhibits, turning the attraction into a scavenger hunt for the mind.
