NCDOT reports US-441 closure in Swain County; national park also closed Balsam Mountain Campground

CHEROKEE, N.C. (Smokies.LIVE Storm Center) — Great Smoky Mountains National Park will close U.S. 441/Newfound Gap Road at 8 p.m. Friday because of strong winds expected from Hurricane Isaias and the potential for downed trees and debris.

The National Park Service also announced that Balsam Mountain Campground closed Friday at 5 p.m. as officials prepare for the storm.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Department of Transportation reports that U.S. 441 is closed in both directions in Swain County, from Old River Road to the North Carolina-Tennessee state line. All lanes closed at 3 p.m. Friday.

The closures come as Isaias moves inland from the Florida Panhandle and tracks toward the Tennessee Valley, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts and hazardous conditions across the southern Appalachians.

Downed trees, falling limbs and debris could create dangerous travel conditions, particularly along mountain roads and higher elevations.

Motorists should avoid closed sections of U.S. 441, plan alternate routes and check road conditions before traveling. Visitors should also monitor national park updates for additional closures as weather conditions evolve.

Stay with Smokies.LIVE Storm Center for the latest road closures, weather alerts and impacts from Hurricane Isaias across the Tennessee and North Carolina mountains.
