Weather-related closures impact a popular scenic drive for Smoky Mountain visitors.
WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA (Smokies.LIVE Travel Center) — Travelers planning to explore the Blue Ridge Parkway should be aware of multiple weather-related road closures that could affect sightseeing plans.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, all lanes are closed on the following sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway:
- From High Ridge Road to N.C. Highway 80, affecting portions of McDowell, Mitchell and Yancey counties.
- From N.C. Highway 80 to Mount Mitchell State Park Road, affecting portions of Buncombe, McDowell and Yancey counties.
Both closures are attributed to a weather-related incident, and there is currently no estimated time for reopening.
While these closures are outside the primary Smokies.LIVE coverage area, they could impact visitors extending their Great Smoky Mountains vacation into western North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the region’s most popular scenic drives, especially during the summer and early fall.
Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling, allow extra time for alternate routes and avoid driving around barricades or closed roadway sections.
