(CHEORKEE, N.C.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Emergency management officials in Swain County, NC have issued a warning for high fire danger today that includes all of the western North Carolina mountains. .
The emergency management reported conditions across the mountains had elevated the fire danger for Friday, January 16, 2026.
“Conditions across much of North Carolina including Swain County are showing elevated fire danger today due to dry fuels, low humidity, and breezy winds,” the agency said on Facebook.
North Carolina Forest Service said outdoor burning should be held off because fires can start easily and spread rapidly under these conditions.
The National Weather Service from GSP said, “dry weather this afternoon will increase fire danger for many locations east of the mountains.”
