(GATLINBURG, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Afternoon models have shifted higher for snow totals going into the weekend.

Gatlinburg could see up to 9 inches of snow, Cherokee 2.5, Newport 5.5 and Sevierville at 4.3. These numbers can and will change. The latest trend takes snow totals up.

A winter storm developing off the coast of North and South Carolina will throw a bit of moisture in the form of snow showers to the mountains.

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM FRIDAY TO 7 PM EST
SATURDAY.
WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4
inches, with locally higher amounts possible over the higher
mountain peaks. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

* WHEN...From 7 PM Friday to 7 PM EST Saturday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous
conditions could impact the Friday evening commute.

On Thursday, The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Great Smoky Mountains ahead of the snow arrival.

– Snow is expected to develop Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday

– Widespread snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is possible across much of the county

– Higher elevations could see 3 to 7 inches of snow

– Mountain winds may gust up to 35 mph

Travel conditions could become hazardous, especially during the Friday evening commute.

Snow-covered and slick roads are likely at times. Motorists should plan for slower travel, allow extra time, and consider postponing unnecessary trips if conditions worsen. Visibility may be reduced during heavier snowfall, particularly in the mountains.

County and city road crews are preparing and will be actively treating roadways as conditions develop.
