(GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Even with the warmer temperatures the past few days and ahead for the parts of the weekend, you should be aware of higher elevation snow and ice.
Snow and ice patches can be found along the roadways going up to Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains. One of the most scenic parts of the drive will be to see the icicles that have formed over the water falls. This should be a reminder of the dangers of ice and how they are still present when lower elevation temperatures are in the 40s and 50s.
There can be a 20 to 30 degree difference in temperatures from Cherokee, NC to Newfound Gap, if not colder on some nights. Some days still don’t get out of the 30s, if above freezing.
“Snow and ice can make mountain roads slick and unpredictable this time of year. Shaded areas, bridges, and higher elevations may stay icy even when conditions look clear,” said the National Park Service.
The park service offered several tips for drivers headed into the park for a winter adventure.

Be prepared for rapidly changing weather
