Multiple rescue agencies responded after report of man falling into river; sheriff’s office leading investigation.
NEWPORT, Tenn. — A multi-agency search ended after rescue crews recovered the body of a man who reportedly fell into a river in Cocke County.
Cocke County Swift Water Rescue responded around 7:10 p.m. to the 1500 block of Pleasant Grove Road after receiving a report of a man who had fallen into the river.
Rescue personnel and Cocke County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived within minutes, interviewed witnesses and began searching the area. Due to the size of the search area and limited daylight remaining, Newport City Swift Water Rescue was requested to assist.
Search teams launched boats from separate locations along the river while Cocke County Dive Team members searched underwater near the man’s last known location. Rescue officials said divers located the victim at approximately 9:10 p.m.
Following the recovery, the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office detective on call assumed command of the scene, following standard investigative procedures. The Newport Rescue Squad assisted with the transfer of the victim.
Rescue officials expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and thanked the agencies that assisted in the response.
The identity of the victim has not been released.
