❄️ Winter in the Smokies: Later Sunrises, Earlier Darkness
During a typical January in Waynesville, North Carolina, a standard-time schedule would bring:
🌅 Sunrise: Around 7:41 a.m.
🌇 Sunset: Around 5:30 p.m.
☀️ Daylight: About 10 hours, 10 minutes
That means many people would start their day before sunrise, while evenings would become dark shortly after the workday.
☀️ Summer in the Smokies: Early Mornings, Long Evenings
By June, the natural summer pattern would create much longer days:
🌅 Sunrise: Around 5:30 a.m.
🌇 Sunset: Around 8:30 p.m.
☀️ Daylight: About 15 hours
For visitors exploring the Great Smoky Mountains, that would mean plenty of morning sunlight for hiking, scenic drives, and outdoor adventures — but evenings would become darker earlier compared with the current daylight saving schedule.
🌎 Why Does This Happen?
The changing daylight is driven by Earth’s 23.5-degree tilt on its axis.
During summer, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, creating longer days and more direct sunlight. During winter, the tilt moves away from the Sun, bringing shorter days and earlier sunsets.
