(SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Anyone from Gatlinburg to Maggie Valley stepping out tonight will feel the cold air and see the snow falling with an additional five inches expected for the higher elevations.
Newfound Gap Road opened on Sunday morning, but by late afternoon the park announced the road would close at 6 p.m. due to snow and ice. Snowfall is expected to continue overnight and through Monday.
The foothills on the Tennessee side of the Smokies will see just a few light snow showers with a light dusting to an inch in some locations. Others may see nothing. The North Carolina side will be different as we see accumulation in the inches of snow.
Reports of heavy snow from Maggie Valley to Waynesville came in Sunday afternoon. While little to no accumulation was happening on Sunday afternoon, it could turn from a light dusting to an inch through the night and into the day on Monday when temperatures struggle to get out of the 20s.
