(GATLINBURG, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – The internet is flooded again with chatter about a weekend snow storm for the Southeast United States. Yes, there is a developing low pressure that could impact us here in the Smoky Mountains.

Some models are hinting closer to 8″ of snow the closer you are to the highest areas of the Smokies with a more common average for areas like Sevierville being closer to 2-3″ of snow. In Western North Carolina. indications are the same.

It is still too early to advise on any types of plans or closures. Once again, we need to wait for the hi-res models for final snowfall totals. Right now, this looks to be a Smoky Mountain threat which will impact travel between Gatlinburg & Cherokee.

I’ve circled above the area to watch for the largest amounts of snow by Sunday morning.

What will be the bigger concern going into the weekend will be the extremely cold air that settling in. It will feel like below zero in Gatlinburg, Cherokee, and in Sevierville.

Plan for hours of below freezing temperatures and feeling like below zero. This is the type of weather when it is dangerously cold to be outside for even a few minutes.

Hikers in the Great Smoky Mountain should consider changes to planned hikes or wear multiple layers of clothing.
