(KNOXVILLE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – The American Red Cross is asking folks across Tennessee to roll up their sleeves and give the gift of life, so blood supplies don’t fall to crucial levels this travel season.
Each day, the Red Cross needs to collect about 12,500 blood donations and nearly 3,000 platelet donations to meet the needs of patients at about 2,500 hospitals and other facilities across the country.

WHY ARE BLOOD DRIVES NEEDED NOW?
“Earlier this year the American Red Cross was in a national severe blood shortage and thankful we’re not in that now. However, we are working to replenish that blood supply,” said Jerrica Williams with the American Red Cross.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States is in need of a blood transfusion. One blood donation means you are saving more than one life.
About 62% of the U.S. population is eligible to give blood but only about 3% donates.
Type O blood is the most needed blood group by hospitals but is often in short supply.
The award-winning Red Cross Blood Donor App makes it easy and convenient for donors to schedule and manage their donation appointments, track the lifetime impact of their donations and recruit others to donate.
