(PIGEON FORGE, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – Ted Bundy, described as one of the most famous and prolific serial killers in U.S. history has been linked to another victim 50 years later and his car held the evidence.
Bundy was linked to the deaths of 30 women and girls in the 1970s and put to death in late 1989.
Now, 50 years after her death, the local sheriff says DNA testing confirmed Bundy was responsible for the 1974 killing of Utah girl Laura Ann Aime, 17, who disappeared after leaving a party alone on Halloween night.
The Sheriff said in a news release that the case was under review along with other cold cases. With this specific case, it was determined that current Forensic Technology, police methods, and initially collected case evidence possessed the appearance of solvability, as Forensic science has greatly evolved in the past several years.
In the days and hours leading to his execution, Bundy, verbally acknowledged his culpability in the death/disappearance of Laura and others.
The crimes Ted Bundy committed and was put to death for, are part of the displays at Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge. This includes the Volkswagen that Bundy owned. Investigators said it was integral to both his murders and conviction as it contained important DNA evidence.
“DNA technology is expanding and improving every day helping to solve cases that have gone unsolved for decades. We hope that this breakthrough helps bring closure to the victim’s family after so many years of uncertainty,” said Ally Pennington, artifacts and programs manager at Alcatraz East Crime Museum.
The Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge features an exhibit on the 30 year execution anniversary of his conviction on January 24, 2019 .
At the time of his death he had confessed to thirty murders, but alluded to more.
