There was an error retrieving the National Weather Service alert data.

(BRYSON CITY, N.C.) SMOKIES.LIVE – The U.S. Forest Service said on Saturday afternoon that the wildfire just 8 miles away from Bryson City had more resources.

There was good news on the containment efforts.

Containment on the Wiggins Creek Fire (formerly reported as the Wiggins Fire) increased to 60% and forward progression has stopped thanks to the suppression actions taken by firefighters on the ground and with support from aircraft. The size of the fire has been adjusted to 58 acres due to more accurate mapping.

Earlier this morning, crews successfully fortified control lines which held against strong wind gusts. Firefighters are continuing to secure control lines and provide structure protection. Smoke will be visible from surrounding areas.

Smoke may affect nearby communities and roadways, especially in the evening and morning commutes. Use caution if driving in the area.
