(GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS, Tenn.) SMOKIES.LIVE – The National Park Service has closed several roads in the Smokies due to winter weather. Newfound Gap Road will closed at 4 p.m. ahead of winter weather forecasted for Wednesday night.

Travelers who need to go between Cherokee, N.C. and Gatlinburg, T.N. will need to go through the I-40 gorge.

Lakeview Drive is also closed due to forecasted winter weather.

The road will remained closed until crews can assess and clear away any snow and ice that accumulates through Thursday.

A system will works its way closer to the mountains on Wednesday and start as rain before turning over to snow in the afternoon and evening hours. Those snow showers will continue into Thursday mid-day.

This will result in accumulating snows for the Great Smoky Mountains tapering down to a few inches to a dusting for adjacent foothills. Hikers in the Great Smoky Mountains should be prepared for a cold hike through the weekend.
